I have a couple of SLR cameras and was looking for a good quality camera that was far more portable but still worked fast and produced good pictures. I looked at allot of cameras before picking this, it's a good blend of features, quality, size and value.
Firstly you can get smaller cameras than this, if you want one to slip into a shirt pocket this is too big, however I have put it into a jacket pocket without it causing a problem. The camera turns on very quickly and the quality of the images it produces is amazing for a camera of this size and cost. The HD video is impressive but you can hear the motor when zooming, this is not too obtrusive but it's there, you have the option to mute the mic when zooming if you don't like the sound. The range of the lens is great, and even at telephoto I fount the Image Stabilisation worked well and I am able to take pictures hand held without any blur. The low light performance of the camera is much better than I was expecting and is just as good taking pictures on a night out as during day light. The manual control over the camera settings is a real winner, most other cameras with similar specifications in this compact camera segment offer little manual control, I have found the manual control easy to use if a little slow to pick the settings you want, its still nice to be able to take the picture you want over the one the camera thinks you want. I have used this camera to create some light graffiti pictures and it performed excellently. Summing up it's a great camera with all the features you could want in a compact and many you may not even use. I highly recommend it. |

| The Samsung WB500 takes very clear pictures in a wide range of light conditions. It starts at an excellent wide angle and zooms easily to a long telephoto - which the image stabilisation assists effectively. Although it takes time to become familiar with changing ISO and WB in the PROG mode, it is actually easy. As an alternative, the SCENE mode covers a remarkably varied range of situations in a point and shoot style and produces excellent pictures. Fits easily in the pocket but not so slight or light that it will jump out. |
Good, But could be better

| Very good photo quality, although in any other mode apart from auto it takes an age to actually take the picture, so the picture ends up blurry and its quite difficult to get a non blurred photo. annoying when you have a small baby to photograph! Annoying also is the flash setting default is on, so you have to turn it off everytime you power on. |
